St Joseph Kisaabwa Primary School is located in Butenga Sub-county, Bukomansimbi District. It was founded by the Catholic Church in 1957. It was later taken over by government in 1981, and it is now a public UPE school.

Through parents’ efforts a block consisting of three classrooms, head teacher’s office, library, staffroom and a store was put in place. However, this block though in use, was incomplete. It lacked windows, doors and had a mud floor.

The Rotary Club of Kololo held a successful medical camp at Kisaabwa primary school, Bukomansimbi district on 15-16 February 2019. A total of over 1500 where treated. RC Kololo noticed the poor condition of the classroom block which was used the general clinic during the medical camp. It no windows, no doors and had a dusty (mud) floor.

Children’s clothes and books would get dirty from the dust; but also the dusty floor would provide a breeding ground for jiggers since many of the children do not wear shoes. When there was a heavy storm, rain would blow through the window and door openings, becoming a health hazard. The school management requested for assistance to construct a concrete floor as a measure to improve hygiene and control jiggers, and to provide windows to protect children from the adverse weather hazards.

Before the Project.

The first (emergency) phase of improvements comprised of the following:

i. Construct a concrete floor in all classrooms

ii. Install windows and doors

iii. Construct a verandah

During RY 2019/20, RC Kololo raised Ugx 17,792,000 from contributions by club members and friends of the club towards the cost of the project. These funds were used for phase one works. By end of RY 2019/20; concreting the floor, installation of glass windows, plastering the front face of the building, construction of front verandah, new blackboards and minor roof repairs had been completed.

The Club planned to complete the remaining works in Phase 2 of the project. The following activities were planned to be carried out in Phase 2:

i. Verandah: Complete the verandah (sides and rear)

ii. Plastering: Complete the plastering – Sides and rear

iii. Painting: Both inside and outside.

During RY 2020-21, National Social Security Fund kindly donated UGX 15,000,000 to the Rotary Club of Kololo for use on club projects. The Club generously allocated UGX 10,000,000 of this funding to Kisaabwa Primary school project. These funds have been used to complete the plastering, complete the verandah and painting. The current look of the project is shown in the pictures below.

After the Project.

There are other needs for funding.

1. Head teacher’s office, library, staffroom and a store: These were not included in project scope. However they now need floor repairs and interior wall repairs and painting to match the rest of the building environment.

2. Heat Problem: The building gets very hot during dry weather due to a low roof. The roof is also weak and rusted and has started leaking (see photos of before project). Replacing the iron sheets and raising the roof to provide better air circulation, would solve this problem.

3. Vocational Training: The school needs to start vocational training to assist the many school drop outs with practical skills. This requires a separate classroom block. A 2-room block would be sufficient for a start, for this purpose.
